Let's say for example, a straight through hole, 1" square hole in 1" plate. This would be 4 square inches, on a wire edm that averages about 10 square inches an hour, you'd have about 24 minutes of burn time.
How would a sinker compare timewise? Let's say
A. Burning the whole square out.
B. Predrilling a 15/16" hole and burning the corners out.
Also, what would one be looking at in regards to electrode wear? Let's say you are holding +/-.002" and are trying to achieve a surface that is similar to a fine milled finish, say about 25 RMS finish.
Thanks!

We have an old (~1996 I believe) Agie HSS 150 EDM at work. Something sprung a leak in the box that houses the U/V mechanism and submerged it in water for an unknown amount of time. We didn't know anything was wrong until the rubber skirt on the top started to inflate. You can see that there is now a fair bit of rust. Given that there are roller bearings in there for the axis motions, I would think that it needs to come apart to be cleaned up. If anyone has had theirs apart, any guidance would be appreciated.

As stated this machine suddenly started breaking the wire. It may break as soon as contact is made with the material or it may cut for a couple minutes before breaking. I haven't run this machine much and need some guidance on what to look for.

Hey guys, first port on Practical Machinist.
I'm trying to figure out why my water has started to smell bad.
I haven't changed the materials I burn or the consumables I use.
I also noticed some (for lack of a better word) "suds" coming out of the pumps. It's not a lot, but it's noticeable.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what may be causing this?

So I've recently started noticing an odd smell coming from the water in my wire burner.
Right around the same time I started to notice this smell white suds started to come out of both pumps.
I haven't changed anything as far as what I'm burning and our consumables.
I did notice however that the resistance is down to 4.5. I read in the manual that it generally tried to keep it between 5.5 and 6.5.
So obviously I'm thinking that the resin tank needs to be switched out, but I actually did that about 2 months ago and a resin tank usually lasts us at least three months sometimes four.
Also, over the 2 months that this tank has been installed I have been running much less parts then in previous months. But the machine is still on for the same amount of time.
To get to the point, I'm wondering if the DI resin tank could possibly be bad after only 2 months. If it is, then what possibly could have caused it?
I may even be going in the totally wrong direction. Does anyone have other suggestions as to what could be causing the smell and suds?
Thanks for your time and advice!

This is a follow up question to my earlier question about dressing electrodes on the machine.
Do any of you Mitsubishi guys know if I can call reverse polarity in my program? I am dressing copper-tungsten electrodes against a carbide block and I'm not always remembering to set the soft switch for reverse polarity. It doesn't help that it is on the second page of the switch menu.

We're looking at a Hansvedt MV-10 sinker with a ZNC controlled orbiter. Does anybody have any experience with one of these? Any comments good or bad to help us make a decision will be greatly appreciated. It's '99 vintage.
Thanks,

Does anyone happen to know the maximum arc size that Mitsubishi MV or A machines can handle? My software stops at R393.7 I need quite a bit larger. When I post larger it turns to segments(which i cannot have). Using Vero/peps

What are good and bad features in Fanuc C600iA machine?
Your company are going to invest first WEDM and final three in competition are:
Fanuc C600iA used 2012 6000h,(reliability, easy to robotic future, half price of new Sodick and Makino)
Sodick ALC600G (linear motors, 10 year guarantee, biggest WEDM manuafacturer)
Makino U6 HEAT (own waterpumps for guides, HEAT feature)
WEDM is going to be first in your company. We will make with WEDM slots to production parts and many kind of fixtures to the productionmachines where is needed high accuracy ±2μm.

Hello!
My Cut 200 have trouble threading the wire through the small part that is rolling up the wire in the upper head when wire break occurs. I suspect that is because the alignment of that part is not straight but in an angle.
Are there any system parameters or manual alignment to set the correct position?
I attach pictures for better understanding.
Thanks for the answers:

Anybody have strong feelings about the different builders of smallish high accuracy sinkers?
I went to a team meeting this morning with the list of issues I've had with our 2001 Mitsubishi EA12E and one of the questions from the plant manager was "well how much is a new one?". That machine is the upper limit of the size we need and maybe a little beyond at that.
I'm interested in pretty much anything good or bad. Control, accuracy, service, parts, all of it.
No budget yet but I do know they aren't commodity machines at this level.
Thanks in advance

Greetings all,
I have been tasked with burning a tipping die into steel with a copper electrode. The hole is .215 deep and the electrode tapers from .01" diameter to .029" diameter. I am hoping someone has a older Sodick like the one I am using can answer some questions regarding the built in "LN Assist" programming tool. Its basically a conversational programmer you input into and it spits out the code to run the burn. I specifically need to know if I should be using the Loran function and which kind. Should I turn it off or switch from circle to cylinder? Also there is this booklet of cutting conditions for different types of electrodes and materials. What is frustrating to me is how different the cutting conditions in the booklet are compared to what LN assist spits out. The manuals are absolutely terrible with no detailed explanations of anything. My finish is coming out way rougher than I need. The ATC (auto tool changer) is not working so I am burning this part in three passes with fresh trodes each time. Cant get anywhere near a mirror finish. I see other companies burning complex and super tiny tipping dies but I am guessing they have modern small hole machines and high end sinker machines. Do I have any hope? Another thing is that my copper 'trode is mounted to an aluminum cylinder which is attached to the tool holder coin. So I have voltage going thru aluminum and then into copper. Will this affect my burn? My supervisor does not think it will but I am suspicious of that. I know this is a long rant but any advice would be appreciated. The machine is a Sodick AQ35L with a LN1 controller.
Thanks

hi there guys,
we have a WEDM machine at my workplace , not that professional type with automatic wire tensioner and stuff but it's good for us.
anyway, with some other interestnig problems , i have experienced some issues with the conductive pads (witch ones touching the wire giving the current )
time to time the machining procedure is slowing down then stops complitely, then the discharges between the piece and the wire disappears
and its starts to sparkle at the conductors .....making the wire cut them ...and damaging them ,i have tried to alter the tension between the wire and the pads ,but the problem is still coming up ..really annoying
any helping words ..or a complete solution???
sorry for my bad english
patrik.

This may have been covered here somewhere before but here is my question.
Just for some background I have never run or setup an EDM
I have a job were I need to cut a 3" diameter hole with 6 keys ways in it through a stack of plates 12" tall. The material is abrasion resistant plate Hardox extreme 65-75RC. The keys are 1/2" half rounds. The accuracy of the bore and keys needs to be +-.003"
What I'm trying to find out id how fast in Inches per minute a wire EDM can cut through this material wile holding the +-.003" tolerance.

I have a Mits FX10 and there is a few issues going on but I am thinking they are due to either the resin pump going out or the circulation pump(?) going out. It keeps giving me either dirty side low or clean side low and neither at the time are low. But at times the clean side is not getting enough water and gets low but off and on and erratically. No specific time or situation really except its primarily during roughing. I used to always get a U827 Pump/Chiller alarm also the generic sequence error.
My question is do the pumps have a water low cut off alarm/switch in them? Say one pump isn't getting enough flow to or from it there for triggering the water low alarm? Or could it be the sensors in the tanks are bad. I cleaned them and they look ok but IDK for sure. My other question is which pump feeds into the chiller? And could there be clogged chiller issues causing the prob? If so how do you clean it out? It's just a radiator type box above the dirty tank with no alarm panel or anything like my fx20 has. I cleaned the fins of a lot of dust n oil but not sure what to do internally if there is anything I can do.
Any feed back is welcome,
Thanks,
Tvalen1432

Hello,
im buying a EDM for moldmaking. Currently im looking for Mitsubishi EA12 V. Does someone have some experience with Mits. for small molds (~ trodes 2mm and some VDI3400/18 surface).
I know that some sodics shuld be better (Doe to the linear motors, also Makinos.......but the $ is the big factor.
Any advice is welcome.
Currently im using some old Taiwan made sinker/stinker..... any new EDM will be big update for me.
Best regards,
Franc

My H425 P25 sinker EDM is refusing to lower its tank using the hydraulic control, and in testing it occurred to me that I have no idea what pressure this thing runs at. I have three slightly different versions of the manual and none of them make any reference to the pressure other than to increase it in certain circumstances. I don't suppose that it is very high as the plastic hydraulic lines seem to be shrunk onto their fittings.
I'm about to fit a guage but if anyone has a clue what ballpark figure to expect it would be very helpful.
